During the 2000s, misleading practices and poor-quality content started taking on SEO penalties. Algorithms became more sophisticated throughout the decade, and search engines started cracking down on spam.

2010s

By 2010, Google was able to suggest search options for its users based on data it had already collected. Social media platforms began to play a bigger role in search engine rankings, and spam tactics and over-advertising helped filter out low-quality articles. In 2015, Google started penalizing websites that weren’t optimized for mobile devices. SEO practices have always changed, and they will continue to as we learn more about our patterns.
