3 Web Design Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

There are many reasons why businesses might consider a website design overhaul. Maybe the current design is not attracting enough search engine traffic, or perhaps it’s not converting visitors well.

When we are working on redesigns at Anchor Wave, we see many of the same design mistakes made over and over. Below are three common web design mistakes that can negatively affect your bottom line and tips for avoiding them:

1. Don’t Bury Important Information

When someone comes to your website, they are most likely looking for an answer to a question, such as “What time is the store open?” or “Do they sell product X at a good price?” If they can’t figure out the answer within a few seconds, then chances are they will leave your site.

Think about why people visit your site and what kind of action you want them to take when they get there. Prioritize vital information related to these desired visitor actions. Make the most important information easy to find directly from your home page.

2. Don’t Ignore Mobile Users

According to eMarketer, by 2015, more than half of the U.S. population will be accessing the web from a mobile device.  To avoid alienating mobile visitors, consider designing a mobile-optimized website.

Don’t make mobile web users scroll and zoom endlessly in order to navigate your website.  Work with your web design firm to build a site that recognizes when a mobile user is visiting and delivers a mobile-optimized version to that visitor.

3. Don’t Forget to Brand It
A well-designed website should promote your company’s brand. The brand consists of the logo, color scheme, fonts, and other design choices that showcase your business’ personality and tone.

Without a properly branded website, your business will have a difficult time establishing trust with customers. The website’s design should instantly create a positive and memorable visual experience for the customer and encourage him or her to return again and again!
