How to Identify the Top-Performing Pages on Your Website

Your company website should inspire each visitor to explore your services or products, not click the back button. By monitoring user behavior on your website, you can pinpoint exactly what’s working, why, and how to improve your web design. Google Analytics allows you to analyze and leverage the following metrics about your top-performing pages.

Pageviews

An instance of a page being loaded by a browser is considered a pageview; repeated views of a single page will count toward the total number of pageviews. For instance, if a visitor reloads a page they have already reached, or if a visitor navigates to a different page but then returns to the original page, this is counted as an additional pageview. A unique pageview aggregates pageviews generated by the same user during the same session. You can drill down to individual pages through Google Analytics to see their pageviews and unique pageviews; generally, the more pageviews, the better.

Average Time Spent on Page

How much time a visitor spends on a page can be a good indicator of its performance. If, for example, the average time spent on your ‘About Us’ page is only two seconds, you probably aren’t engaging your visitors. A professionally designed webpage will encourage visitors to interact with the website, not navigate away.

Bounce Rate

The bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits, or sessions in which a visitor left your site from the entrance page without any interaction. In other words, if several users start on your ‘Welcome’ page and then navigate away without visiting any other pages, your bounce rate could be very high. Poor web design is often to blame for a high bounce rate.

The Big Picture

Ask yourself some questions about your top-performing pages: What search terms and keywords brought users to that page? Is it a popular landing page? What are your sources of traffic? The answers will help you optimize your entire website.
